The world. Burn it.

christieannyway asked you:

So if Sebastian can influence Jace’s dark side through their trippy mind connection thing, does that mean Jace can tug on Sebastian’s human side? Does Sebastion even have a human side? I find myself wanting some kind of redemption for him, which is probably a bad idea.

cecyherondale asked you:

Cassie, in the first place I wanted to say I really love your books. Your books inspired me in so many ways that I could not even explain. Helped me in very bad moments of my life and I wanted to say thank you for everything. And I also wanted to ask this: Sebastian can be saved? I mean, he’s bad, and it’s not even his fault… But in some way, I can’t imagine how, he could be saved from all this devilish stuff in his soul and blood?”

* * *

I can think of thirty ways he could be, but I think the question is more should he be and will he be? You know, how bad do you have to be before there’s no redemption? Maybe there is no such thing as that bad. In theory redemption ought to always be possible, but you don’t ever get it for free. Also, does Sebastian even want redemption? In theory he wants to burn the world down, which is not an encouraging place to start. But indeed, if he bleeds over into Jace, does Jace bleed over into him? Do they switch alliances or both end up some muddy mixture of good and bad? How do you get forgiveness when you’ve done the unforgivable? I mean do you think the Lightwoods would ever forgive him?

foreverandalwayssalvatore asked you:

How are you able to write a character as evil and dark as Sebastian taking CoLS from his point of view when his mind is so twisted… I don’t know why but I also would love to see him to burn down the world, he is so wickidly attractive and intriguing!”

——-

I am sure he would be pleased to hear that. Sebastian is nothing if not possessed of the belief he could pretty much seduce anyone. Even his sister.

“How do you write from his point of view?” . The thing about villains, if Seb even is one, is that everyone is the hero of their own story. Villains don’t think they’re villains. Sebastian doesn’t want to burn down the world just because he likes fire (it would inconvenience him, burning down the world, if he didn’t have a larger plan, since the world is where he keeps his stuff. Yes, I just quoted the Tick). He has beliefs about the way he’s justified in what he does. He has beliefs about the things he needs and the things that are owed him. He has a need for love and connection. He has points of weakness. All of that warped stuff is writerly crack cocaine. Writing evil character POV is fantastic fun. It just makes you want to do it all the time. Fortunately a little evil, like a little frosting, goes a long way, otherwise we’d never want to return to the normal folks.
