The Last Hours

Hi cassie! I am a huge fan of your books and i was wondering about your upcoming book series TLH. I looked it up online but I cannot seem to be able to find much on it. There is probably a limit of things you are willing to mention about the series, so I was wondering if you tell me what has been already released about the series? — thislittlebookowl

Hello Cassie! I am a huge, huge fan. :) I was wondering if you could maybe give some insight as to how the characters in The Last Hours are going to act, like their personalities and such. — thelastinstruments

There is a limited amount I can say, especially this far in advance — and keep in mind things can always change. But this is pretty much what we know so far, the illustrated version:

The Last Hours is a new Shadowhunters series set in 1903. It deals with the next generation after Will, Tessa and Jem as well as Charlotte and Henry’s children, Tatiana Blackthorn’s children, the Lightwood kids, and many more. 1903 is right around the time the Victorian era tips over into the Edwardian era — beautiful clothes, fabulous history and so much more that I’m excited to write about! (I’ve even been keeping a crazy Pinterest board for inspiration.) The title is taken from the book Great Expectations, of which the series is a retelling: those of you who’ve read The Midnight Heir installment of the Bane Chronicles probably have some ideas about certain of the characters!

You have been in every line I have ever read, since I first came here, the rough common boy whose poor heart you wounded even then. You have been in every prospect I have ever seen since — on the river, on the sails of the ships, on the marshes, in the clouds, in the light, in the darkness, in the wind, in the woods, in the sea, in the streets. You have been the embodiment of every graceful fancy that my mind has ever become acquainted with. The stones of which the strongest London buildings are made, are not more real, or more impossible to be displaced by your hands, than your presence and influence have been to me, there and everywhere, and will be. Estella, to the last hours of my life, you cannot choose but remain part of my character, part of the little good in me, part of the evil. — Great Expectations, Charles Dickens

There will be three books: Chain of Thorns, Chain of Gold, and Chain of Iron — also a reference to Great Expectations.

(“Imagine one selected day struck out of it, and think how different its course would have been. Pause you who read this, and think for a moment of the long chain of iron or gold, of thorns or flowers, that would never have bound you, but for the formation of the first link on one memorable day." — Great Expectations)

The books will interconnect with The Dark Artifices trilogy as two separate trilogies that are also the stories of the Blackthorns, Herondales and Carstairs, much like TMI and The Infernal Devices interconnected despite taking place in different time periods and locations. The exact order of publication isn’t decided yet. Lady Midnight, the first of the Dark Artifices, will certainly be the next Shadowhunter book coming out, and I’ll keep you up to date on the publication order when it’s nailed down.

I hope you’re looking forward to reading about Jem, Tessa and Will and their immediate families and descendants as much as I am looking forward to writing about them! In the meantime, I thought you might like to see/get to know a few of the prominent characters. Cassandra Jean drew these for me back when I was still solidifying some of the plot outlines and character details. You can also find most of these names on the family tree and identify their connections. Let’s start with …

image Cordelia Carstairs. Daughter of Jem’s Uncle Elias. Bit of a scapegrace and ever since she was ten she’s had a sort of a crush on

image James Herondale, who is parabatai with image the always-delightful Matthew Fairchild. James is totally in love with and has a very odd relationship with Tatiana’s Blackthorn’s ward image Grace Blackthorn, whose brother Jesse Blackthorn may or may not be dead image a mystery that occupies the busy brain of writer image Lucie Herondale, whose father would really prefer she marry image Alastair Carstairs, Cordelia’s older brother. Shown with Cortana — looks like Elias did as Tessa suggested and passed it down to his own children after all.Alastair is best friends with image Charles Fairchild, who you may remember as Potentially Buford from Clockwork Princess. Charles would like to be the next Consul, alas, and Henry finds he rather gets along better with Cecily and Gabriel’s son image Christopher, a scientist, who is the younger brother of the ever so sophisticated image Anna Lightwood, who keeps her own flat on Percy Street and everyone else’s secrets.

This isn’t all the characters, but it’s a visual tour of quite a few of the significant ones (barring those, like Tessa, Jem, Will and the other adults, who you already know!) I find having visuals of characters often helps while I’m writing so these live above my desk!

A small bird reminded me that the Stephen Herondale and Amatis Graymark flower cards hadn’t been posted. Here they are!

Hi Cassie. I hope you end up selling the tarot cards on like because I think they are amazing and so unique to the series. I hope you sell them on a site like the book depository so I know it will ship to Australia :) p.s. I am so freaking excited for TDA!!!! — monsters-drink-tea

Cassandra Jean and I are in the middle of finalizing putting up the tarot cards for sale now. It would be a limited run through a distributor that (as far as I know) ships worldwide.

Last but assuredly not least, Cassandra Jean’s Tessa and Will and the DSDS in Clockwork Princess.

Hi Cassie! Has CJP finished all the DSAS/DSBS/DSES/DSDS pictures? I’m not sure if she has and I’ve missed them but I’ve only ever seen the DSES and the DSAS and that was a while ago… I can’t seem to find them anymore. Could you repost them? — tmitidtdatlh

Ask and ye shall receive. The first is the DSAS which started it all — Clary and Jace in City of Fallen Angels. The second is Clary and Jace in the club in City of Lost Souls. And the last is Clary and Jace in Edom in City of Heavenly Fire. I believe they grow progressively more nakedish in each picture (though there is NO NUDITY here.)

There are also two from The Infernal Devices, which I will post separately in a minute.

More Floriography, otherwise known as Cassandra Jean’s flower card project, matching up characters with flowers that symbolize their characteristics! From TID, Nate Gray, brought down by folly, and Tessa, symbolizing unity against evil.

People often ask what the parabatai ceremony looks like, so I asked Cassandra Jean to render Emma and Julian’s, complete with the oath and the the three rings of fire — you step from your individual ring into the shared ring, and you draw the rune on each other. Don’t try the fire part at home.

Last of the TMI flower cards by Cassandra Jean — Maia (who’s been posted before) and Bat. Moving on to TID!

Almost to the end of the flower card pictures! (If you want to see all of them you can check the flowers tag on my tumblr or the Cassandra Jean page on the amazing Shadowhunter wiki.)

Cards for ladies in power! Jia, the consul, gets circumspection since she’s a careful politician, Camille gets cold-heartedness, Lily ambition, and Imogen Herondale (remember when that was the first time we heard the name Herondale?), the Inquisitor, gets Justine Shall Be Done.

I just finished reading the ARC of your newest series with Holly Black. I gotta say I’m sooooo excited for more! Loved it!! — v-e-r-t-e-b-r-a-t-e

Thanks! I put this up here for Holly to read it. Also I thought I’d start intro-ing some of the character designs that Cassandra Jean did. Meet Call, our grumpy protagonist, and his pet, Havoc, a wolf with a secret.
