CITY OF BONES - CITY OF ASHES - CITY OF GLASS

thatblondeeveryonelaughsat asked you:
There is a really nasty hate blog going on about you right now. And I’ll be damned if I didn’t want to grab a seraph blade and my wand and go all nerd rage on her.

What, only one nasty hate blog? :) (Sorry, had a Jace moment there.)

Well, hate blogs are sad and gross. They are also an annoyance and bore for you guys, because they clog up tumblr tags and make things that should be fun, unfun. They are unfortunately also just an inevitability — there are hate blogs about a ton of authors: Stephenie Meyer and George RR Martin and John Green and Rick Riordan. As my husband says, the internet is 80% porn, 10% inaccurate movie information, and 10% hating people for strange reasons.

I totally understand the wand and seraph blade response, but the best way to deal is to block and ignore, because hate blogs are about attention. And the really really best thing you can do is to counter hate with positivity. Without linking to hate or referencing it, you can blow up the tags with happy and awesome things — this is an exciting time anyway with a new book out in just over a week and movie casting going on right now — so making art and manips, making even a one-line happy post, making hug .gifs and funny drawings, all of that fills up the tags with happy stuff and drowns out the nasty. Even just making posts about how much you love books and reading and writing and characters in general, is a way to take the negative stuff and flip it into something good.

In fact, I’ll take my own advice and start posting snippets from City of Lost Souls starting today, instead of Tuesday, with one a day until the book release. Which will hopefully be a thing that adds fun and happy to the universe, even if in a little way. :)

[Also, since I did get an ask or two about this, um, no, no one has ever sued me. Not ever. In my whole life. About anything. Ever. Really, really, really not. Never happened. Not something you should worry about.]

And now: positivity!
